Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to take a census of Israel.

ܘܐܡܪ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܝܘܐܒ ܒܪ ܨܘܪܝܐ ܘܠܪ̈ܘܪܒܢܘܗܝ ܕܥܡܐ ܙܠܘ ܘܡܢܘ ܠܥܡܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܡܢ ܒܪ ܫܒܥ ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܕܢ ܘܬܘ ܠܘܬܝ ܘܐܕܥ ܡܢܝܢܗ ܕܥܡܐ

David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know how many there are.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܝܘܐܒ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܡܠܟܐ ܢܘܣܦ ܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܟ ܥܠ ܥܡܗ ܐܟܘܬܗܘܢ ܘܐܟܘܬܗܘܢ ܡܐܐ ܙܒܢ̈ܝܢ ܘܥܝܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܡܪܝ ܡܠܟܐ ܢܚ̈ܙܝܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܟܠܗܘܢ ܥܒܕ̈ܘܗܝ ܐܢܘܢ ܘܡܪܢ ܡܠܟܐ ܠܡ̇ܢܘ ܐܨܛܒܝ ܒܗ̇ ܒܡܠܬܐ ܗܕܐ

Joab said, “May Yahweh make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”

ܘܡܠܬܗ ܕܡܠܟܐ ܥܫܢܬ ܥܠ ܝܘܐܒ ܘܢܦܩ ܝܘܐܒ ܘܗܠܟ ܒܟܠܗ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܗܦܟ ܐܬܐ ܠܐܘܪܫܠܡ

Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, then came to Jerusalem.

ܘܝܗܒ ܝܘܐܒ ܡܢܝܢܐ ܘܚܘܫܒܢܐ ܕܥܡܐ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܘܗܘܐ ܚܘܫܒܢܐ ܕܒ̈ܢܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܐܠܦ ܐ̈ܠܦܝܢ ܘܡܐܐ ܐ̈ܠܦܝܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܪ̈ܓܠܝܐ ܫ̇ܡ̈ܛܝ ܣܝܦܐ ܘܫܒܛܐ ܕܒܝܬ ܝܗܘܕܐ ܗܘܘ ܒܡܢܝܢܐ ܐܪܒܥܡܐܐ ܘܫܒܥܝܢ ܐ̈ܠܦܝܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܫ̇ܡܛܝ ܣܝܦܐ

Joab gave the sum of the census of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew a sword; and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew a sword.

ܘܠܘ̈ܝܐ ܘܟܗ̈ܢܐ ܘܫܒܛܐ ܕܒܝܬ ܒܢܝܡܝܢ ܠܐ ܐܬܡܢܝ ܥܡܗܘܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܣܠܝ ܝܘܐܒ ܡܠܬܗ ܕܡܠܟܐ ܘܠܐ ܨܒܐ ̇—̇— ܝܘܐܒ ܠܡܡܢܐ ܐܢܘܢ
'nwn lmmn' yw'b tsb' wl' dmlk' mlthh yw'b d'sly mTl emhwn 'thmny l' bnymyn dbyth wshbT' wkhn' wlwy'
But he didn’t count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.

ܘܐܬܒܐܫ ܦܬܓܡܐ ܒܥܝ̈ܢܝ ܡܪܝܐ ܥܠ ܕܡܢܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܐܝܣܪܝܠ
l'ysryl dwyd dmn' el mry' beyny pthgm' w'thb'sh
God was displeased with this thing; therefore he struck Israel.

ܘܐܡܪ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܚܛܝܬ ܛܒ ܒܡܕܡ ܕܥܒܕܬ ܒܦܬܓܡܐ ܗܢܐ ܘܐܦ ܗܫܐ ܐܥܒܪ ܚܘܒ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܥܒܕܟ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܣܟܠܬ ܛܒ

David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”

ܘܩܕܡ ܕܘܝܕ ܒܨܦܪܐ ܘܡܠܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܗܘܬ ܥܠ ܓܕ ܢܒܝܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ

Yahweh spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,

ܙܠ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܗܟܢܐ ܐܡ̇ܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܬܠܬ ܒܝ̈ܫܢ ܡܝܬܐ ܐܢܐ ܥܠܝܟ ܓܒܝ ܠܟ ܚܕܐ ܡܢܗܝܢ ܘܐܥܒܕ ܠܟ

“Go and speak to David, saying, ‘Yahweh says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”

ܘܐܬܐ ܓܕ ܢܒܝܐ ܠܘܬ ܕܘܝܕ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܗܟܢܐ ܐܡ̇ܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܩܒܠ ܠܟ

So Gad came to David and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Take your choice:

ܐܘ ܬܠܬ ܫܢ̈ܝܢ ܟܦܢܐ ܒܐܪܥܟ ܐܘ ܬܠܬܐ ܝܪ̈ܚܝܢ ܬܬܡܣܪ ܩܕܡ ܒܥܠܕܒܒܟ ܘܗܘ ܢܗܘܐ ܪܕ̇ܦ ܠܟ ܘܗܘ ܢܗܘܐ ܫܠܝܛ ܒܟ ܐܘ ܬܠܬܐ ܝܘܡ̈ܝܢ ܚܪܒܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܒܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܐܦ ܗܫܐ ܕܥ ܘܚܙܝ ܡܢܐ ܝܗ̇ܒ ܐܢܬ ܦܬܓܡܐ ܠܘܬ ܡ̇ܢ ܕܫܕܪܢܝ ܠܘܬܟ

either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days of the sword of Yahweh, even pestilence in the land, and Yahweh’s angel destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.’”

ܘܐܡܪ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܓܕ ܥܩܬ ܠܝ ܛܒ ܢܫܬܠܡ ܒܐܝܕ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܕܣܓܝܐ̈ܝܢ ܪ̈ܚܡܘܗܝ ܛܒ ܘܒܐܝܕܐ ܕܒܢܝܢ̈ܫܐ ܠܐ ܢܫܬܠܡ

David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into Yahweh’s hand, for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”

ܘܝܗܒ ܡܪܝܐ ܡܘܬܢܐ ܒܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܢܦܠܘ ܡܢ ܐܝܣܪܐܝܠ ܫܒܥ̈ܝܢ ܐ̈ܠܦܝܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ

So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.

ܘܫܕܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܡܠܐܟܐ ܠܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܠܡܚܒܠܘܬܗ̇ ܘܟܕ ܡܚܒܠ ܠܗ̇ ܚܙܝܗܝ ܡܪܝܐ ܘܐܬܒܝܐ ܡܢ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܡܠܐܟܐ ܕܡܚܒܠ ܣܓܝ ܚܒܠܬ ܡܟܝܠ ܩܦܘܣ ܐܝܕܟ ܘܡܠܐܟܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܫܪܐ ܗܘܐ ܠܘܬ ܐܕܪܗ ܕܐܪܢ ܝܒܘܣܝܐ

God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, Yahweh saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” Yahweh’s angel was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

ܘܐܪܝܡ ܕܘܝܕ ܥܝܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܚܙܐ ܠܡܠܐܟܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܩܐ̇ܡ ܒܝܬ ܫܡܝܐ ܠܐܪܥܐ ܘܣܝܦܗ ܫܡܝܛ ܘܐܚܝܕ ܒܐܝܕܗ ܘܩܐ̇ܡ ܠܥܠ ܡܢ ܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܘܢܦܠ ܕܘܝܕ ܘܩܫܝ̈ܫܐ ܕܐܝܬ ܗܘܘ ܥܡܗ ܡܟܣܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܣܩ̈ܐ ܘܢܦܠܘ ܥܠ ܐܦܝ̈ܗܘܢ

David lifted up his eyes, and saw Yahweh’s angel standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.

ܘܐܡܪ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܐܢܐ ܗܘ ܕܐܡܪܬ ܕܐܡܢܐ ܠܥܡܐ ܘܐܢܐ ܗܘ ܚܛܝܬ ܘܛܒ ܪܒܐ ܗܝ ܣܟܠܘܬܐ ܕܐܣܟܠܬ ܗܠܝܢ ܕܝܢ ܥܢܐ ܬܡܝ̈ܡܬܐ ܡܢܐ ܥܒܕܘ ܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܗܝ ܬܗܘܐ ܠܗ̇ ܐܝܕܟ ܒܝ ܘܒܒܝܬ ܐܒܝ ܘܡܢ ܥܡܐ ܢܬܟܠܐ ܡܘܬܢܐ

David said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Yahweh my God, be against me and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”

ܘܡܠܐܟܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܐܡܪ ܠܓܕ ܢܒܝܐ ܣܩ ܐܡܪ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܣ̇ܠܩ ܒ̇ܢܐ ܡܕܒܚܐ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܒܐܕܪܗ ܕܐܪܢ ܝܒܘܣܝܐ
ybwsy' d'rn b'drh lmry' mdbkh' bn' slq ldwyd 'mr sq nby' lgd 'mr dmry' wml'kh
Then Yahweh’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

ܘܣܠܩ ܕܘܝܕ ܐܝܟ ܦܬܓܡܗ ܕܓܕ ܕܐܡܪ ܒܫܡܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ

David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in Yahweh’s name.

ܘܚܙܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܡܠܐܟܐ ܕܡܚܒܠ ܒܥܡܐ ܕܩܦܣ ܐܝܕܗ ܘܠܐ ܚ̇ܒܠ ܬܘܒ

Ornan turned back and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

ܘܐܬܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܘܬ ܐܪܢ ܘܐܬܦܢܝ ܐܪܢ ܘܚܙܐ ܠܡܠܟܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܘܣܓܕ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܥܠ ܐܦܘ̈ܗܝ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܐܪܥܐ ܘܢܦܩ ܐܪܢ ܡܢ ܐܕܪܗ

As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

ܘܐܡܪ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܐܪܢ ܗܒ ܠܝ ܕܘܟܬܐ ܕܐܕܪܐ ܗܢܐ ܘܐܒܢܐ ܒܗ̇ ܡܕܒܚܐ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܒܟܣܦܐ ܘܒܕܡ̈ܝܐ ܛܒ̈ܐ ܗܒܝܗ̇ ܠܝ ܘܢܬܟܠܐ ܡܘܬܢܐ ܡܢ ܥܡܐ
em' mn mwthn' wnthkl' ly hbyh Tb' wbdmy' bksp' lmry' mdbkh' bh w'bn' hn' d'dr' dwkth' ly hb l'rn dwyd w'mr
Then David said to Ornan, “Sell me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to Yahweh on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܐܪܢ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܣܒ ܠܟ ܡܪܝ ܡܠܟܐ ܘܢܥܒܕ ܡܪܝ ܡܠܟܐ ܡܕܡ ܕܫܦܝܪ ܒܥܝܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܐܢܐ ܝܗ̇ܒ ܐܢܐ ܬܘܪ̈ܐ ܠܥܠܬܐ ܘܓܪܓܪܐ ܠܩܝܣ̈ܐ ܘܚ̈ܛܐ ܠܩܘܪܒܢܐ ܘܟܠ ܡܕܡ ܕܡܬܒܥܐ ܐܢܐ ܝ̇ܗܒ

Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܐܪܢ ܚܣ ܠܝ ܡܙܒܢ ܙܒ̇ܢ ܐܢܐ ܡܢܟ ܒܟܣܦܐ ܘܒܕܡ̈ܝܐ ܐܝܟ ܕܫ̇ܘܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܠܐ ܢܣ̇ܒ ܐܢܐ ܕܝܠܟ ܘܡܣܩ ܐܢܐ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܥܠܬܐ ܕܡܓܢ

King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for Yahweh, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”

ܘܙܒܢ ܕܘܝܕ ܡܢ ܐܪܢ ܕܘܟܬܐ ܗ̇ܝ ܕܐܕܪܐ ܒܚܡܫܝܢ ܐܣܬܪ̈ܝܢ
'sthryn bkhmshyn d'dr' hy dwkth' 'rn mn dwyd wzbn
So David gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.

ܘܒܢܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܬܡܢ ܡܕܒܚܐ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܘܩܪܒ ܥܠܘ̈ܬܐ ܘܫܠܡ̈ܐ ܐܡܪ̈ܐ ܘܨܠܝ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ ܘܥܢܝܗܝ ܘܢܚܬܬ ܢܘܪܐ ܡܢ ܫܡܝܐ ܘܐܟܠܬ ܥܠܘ̈ܬܐ ܕܐܝܬ ܗܘ̈ܝ ܥܠ ܡܕܒܚܐ
mdbkh' el hwy d'yth elwth' w'klth shmy' mn nwr' wnkhthth wenyhy mry' qdm wtsly 'mr' wshlm' elwth' wqrb lmry' mdbkh' thmn dwyd wbn'
David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on Yahweh; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering.

ܘܐܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܠܡܠܐܟܐ ܟܕ ܚܙܐ ܐܗܦܟ ܣܝܦܟ ܠܚܠܬܗ

Then Yahweh commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.

ܒܙܒܢܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܟܕ ܚܙܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܕܥܢܝܗܝ ܡܪܝܐ ܒܐܕܪܗ ܕܐܪܢ ܝܒܘܣܝܐ ܘܕܒܚ ܬܡܢ ܕܒܚ̈ܐ ܪ̈ܘܪܒܐ

At that time, when David saw that Yahweh had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.

ܘܨܠܝ ܬܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܡܫܟܢܐ ܕܥܒܕ ܗܘܐ ܡܘܫܐ ܒܡܕܒܪܐ ܒܡܦܩܢܐ ܕܒ̈ܢܝ ܐܝܣܪܐܝܠ ܡܢ ܡܨܪܝܢ

For Yahweh’s tabernacle, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.

ܒܗ ܒܙܒܢܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܕܚܠ ܗܘܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܛܒ ܘܠܐ ܡܫܟܚ ܗܘܐ ܠܡܐܙܠ ܠܡܨܠܝܘ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܕܚܠ ܗܘܐ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܚܪܒܐ ܕܡܠܐܟܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ

But David couldn’t go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid because of the sword of Yahweh’s angel.
